SEX AND THE CITY
The second Sex and the City film is due for release this month, I cannot wait…
TOPSHOP MAKE UP
Our favourite high street store has finally launched their own beauty collection, TOPSHOP MAKE UP, a variety of lipsticks/ glosses, eyeshadows, blushers, nail polishes, and all of your other make up bag staples with some special Topshop magic thrown in for good measure. To celebrate they have also set up a Virtual-Makeover tool online for us to try and test out different products before we buy them, and to help us create a new look especially for summer – upload one of your own photos or use one of their pre-loaded model images for some make-over fun.
For more information please visit your local store, or go to http://www.topshop.co.uk
Shoe shop Faith has just entered administration, leaving uncertain waters for the future of the brand. The company are not taking any online sales at the moment, but you can receive 20% off your purchase in store.
Apologies for being out of the loop this month, my dissertation naturally took over my life a bit – I have put together a very long list over the past few weeks of ‘what is hot and what is not’, but seeing as there is only two more days left of April, I promise you an extra long May posting instead…
Absolutely obsessed with Marina and the Diamonds and Ellie Goulding – both The Family Jewels and Lights are total genius. Clear and echoing vocals lay on traditional acoustics and tender piano notes with retro pop backing tracks, bringing a new rich sound to the charts. This modern indie-folk inspired pop is a refreshing change for our music scene, and one that I am hoping will go from strength to strength in the coming months. Every track (on both albums) are beautifully crafted for easy listening, while the quirky remixes (Starry Eyed – Jakwob Remix) are perfect for a house or beach party soundtrack. Both albums have been on repeat for the last week, and they have not bored me yet, definitely two classic albums for the year.
Marina and the diamonds (seriously cannot wait to see her live in May) – The Family Jewels;
1. Are you satisfied? 2. Shampain 3. I Am Not A Robot 4. Girls 5. Mowgli’s Road 6. Obsessions 7. Hollywood 8. The Outsider 9. Hermit The Frog 10. Oh No! 11. Rootless 12. Numb 13. Guilty
Ellie Goulding (again cannot wait to see her live at Bestival festival in September) – Lights;
1. Guns and Horses 2. Starry Eyed 3. This Love (Will Be Your Downful) 4. Under The Sheets 5. The Writer 6. Every Time You Go 7. Wish I Stayed 8. Your Biggest Mistake 9. I’ll Hold My Breath 10. Salt Skin
A special note must also be made to keep a watchful eye on their wardrobes, I predict some effortless cool trends and statement pieces appearing over the course of the next year.
I woke up today and the sun was the shining, spring has finally arrived, and I left the house in my silk boyfriend blazer for the first time leaving behind the winter blues embracing the almost slightly warmer weather. Oasis has finally released their Spring/ Summer collections in ‘O’ magazine, full of delightful ideas to spruce up your new season wardrobe – pick up your copy in all stores now. Go to www.oasis-stores.com for more information – you can also catch a 20% offer which ends on March 6th 2010.
The World Cup also begins in june and as usual the shops are selling merchandise months in advance. If you want to look classy while still supporting the team invest in a chic rock inspired union jack t.shirt, or a cami in either red or blue, and wear with jeans or a denim mini. Dress it up with an effortlessly cool boyfriend blazer and to top it off add some red lippie or red nail varnish.
Alternatively add a union jack clutch bag to any outfit like this Wow Union Jack Sequin Clutch £30 from Accessorize;
magazine also launched their first issue of Company high-street edit on the 5th of March. This is a new bi-annual stand-alone high street supplement with designer news. You can pick up a copy at any good magazine retail stand for £3.99: this will be my style bible for the season.
For all the Gossip Girl fans out there watch your local Miss. Selfridge store as they are in the process of launching 8 dresses based on the styles of Serena, Blair, Jenny, and Vanessa, as well as the designs of Gossip Girl costume designer Erin Daman. Miss. Selfridge is owned by Arcadia group and will be partnering with Warner Bros for the collection.
Lace leotards and high waisted skirts? a perfect relationship. This is an up to date, although vintage inspired, sexy and feminine outfit but at the same time there are simply just too many girls embracing it so it is beginning to lose its originality. Steer clear if you like to stand out – or keep for somewhere special.
Leggings and jeggings should also take a back seat for a while. Leggings have reached wardrobe staple status but do they really need to be worn with everything? They are also LEGGINGS not trousers, so try to resist wearing them with short belly button grazing tops, jeggings are also JEGGINGS not jeans so some long top coverage would also work a treat. Unless you can find a unique pair of jeggings you would do well to invest in a pair of statement jeans instead for the summer to break our fashion complacency.
I also used to love my UGG boots a year or two ago, I would wear them with nearly everything, everywhere, they kept my toes extremely toasty. However I have again begun to feel tired with this trend – there are some amazing boots and shoes to wear with chic new outfits out on the high street and in high fashion, it’s a new year so why not try something different.
The sales are finally beginning to dwindle out of the shops, and the summer collections are bringing in a fresh beacon of light for the next season – still ‘patiently’ waiting for the warmer weather so I can sport my baby pink silk boyfriend blazer.
The all american girl look has made a breakthrough – think Ke$ha with stars + stripes, and eagle print t.shirts with cowboy boots – ankle or calf length. Denim is also key to this theme, as well as suede, feathers and fringing. Topshop and Next have both brought in a ‘Saloon’ collection hailing this look.
Bleached and washed out denim (not tie dye) also adds to this look with waistcoats, western style shirts, denim minis (added rips will give it an edge), or a denim jacket which will bring in a real eighties and nineties feel to your wardrobe.
I am waiting for the right opportunity to invest in some light blue bleached jeggings, perfect with the above blazer and a festival trilby. Also loving http://joesjeans.com/ the new jean leggings collection – varying from ripped black jeggings, grey, white and even lilac – a colour to suit every personality and mood. Just add a band t.shirt, and a leather jacket, or waistcoat.
As for footwear, ankle work boots are becoming extremely popular; River Island and Topshop have released their take on the boot, all the Hollister staff were also seen wearing them as part of their uniform (spotted when shopping last week).
Try http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?beginIndex=0&catalogId=19551&storeId=12556&categoryId=175036&parent_category_rn=175013&langId=-1&top=Y and http://xml.riverisland.com/flash/content.php and go to boots for inspiration.
So its spring and I’m feeling all of those light and fluffy floral prints – yes put aside the harsh vintage patterns and replace with pastels and nudes; girly, flirty and sexy. ASOS calls this look the ‘New Romantics’ and also predicts a burst of colour for our accessories and makeup bags, hello candy lips and rosy cheeks. Imagine “Chanel’s flirty milkmaids rolling in the hay, Christopher Kane’s pastel gingham skirts slashed to the thigh, the unavoidable underwear as outerwear…and ballet-girl sweetness” adds ASOS, ASOS magazine February 2010 page 43.
Shops are also going crazy for eighties inspired sportswear, American Apparel is your best friend for this look. Topshop however have recently got in a great few pairs of high-top trainers, whether they be for there and back gym or dance sessions, gigs, raves or day-to-day use, just add some tights and shorts or wear with jeans.
This trend also respects the new Henry Holland young fashions collection launch in Debenhams stores up and down the country later this month, visit http://www.houseofholland.co.uk/ for more information.
Riverside – Sidney Samson, TC – Where’s My Money, Major Lazer – Pon De Floor, Take That – Wiley (probably the most overplayed songs in the clubs at the moment)
End Credits – Chase and Status ft Plan B
Hollywood – Marina And The Diamonds (next months issue’s cover star for my group’s music magazine project)
Sugababes – Wear My Kiss
One Republic – All The Right Moves
Jason Derulo – In My Head
Don’t Stop Believing – Journey or Glee versions – getting slightly partial to the GLEE bug – tune in every Monday at 9pm on E4!!!
First there was just Twilight, now we have True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, and new film Daybreakers (apart from the gruesome moments, the story however was not that bad) – which unsurprisingly have the same thing in common, yes they are all about Vampires. Would it be okay to ask if producers could give this genre a break for a while? it is afterall another 8 months until Halloween, surely Buffy was once enough? no wait I hear there is another Twilight film due for release this year.
Crop tops – what was once seen as a fresh-faced style last year seems to have become a wardrobe staple this year – is there anywhere I can find a reasonable sized top? These are cool for the odd occasion, but not for a whole collection?
A spot of flu, some heavy deadlines and exams have brought my postings to a halt, apologies.
Last month of 2009 so let’s go out with a bang!!!
Example – Won’t go quietly (saw him at T4’s stars of 2009 and he was rather special…very pleasantly surprised :))
The Saturdays – Ego
Rihanna – Russian Roulette
Sugababes – About A Girl
Darin ft Kat De Luna – Breathing In Your Love
Paloma Faith – Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful
Timbaland – Morning After Dark
FUR – but faux please!!! It’s been everywhere this month from coats to gilets, a big winterwarmer. River Island have a good choice from the daring leopard print (Alexa Chung is just one to sport this look) and the very simple and basic cream vintage style that can be worn with a bow or a brooch. If you have already invested in a winter coat this year then try out a fur gilet, available in black, cream, brown and grey from our favourite high street shops, and can be worn with jeans and boots or layered over a dress, an essential 09 winter wardrobe filler.
True to christmas style we also see the return of tutu skirts. Remember Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex And The City credits when she gets splashed by the bus? Cheryl Cole was seen wearing a pink slim line, almost identical tutu style netted skirt over a grey vest top with a black leather jacket, Urban Outfitters has the most similar replica for £35 which can be found at http://www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk/Kimchi+Blue-Tulle-Skirt/invt/5120424724498&bklist=icat,5,shop,womens,womensclothing,skirtsshorts
New Look also has this black one for just £18 at http://www.newlook.co.uk/1822775/182277501/ProductDetails.aspx
Or if you want something a little shorter try this gold and black one from Miss. Selfridge, also £35 http://www.missselfridge.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=20555&storeId=12554&categoryId=63769&parent_category_rn=&productId=1497282&langId=-1
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
Going into work after some holiday last month, I was surprised to find that the christmas decorations had already been put up. Working in Debenhams this also means that the christmas mega days have started – that is all Debenhams stores are open for three or so days from like 7 in the morning until midnight, giving customers 20% off everything in store = good times, crazy long hours and overtime = bad times for us staff. As much as I love christmas, it seems to come around earlier every year, and working in retail is a nightmare (but at least it gives us a chance to grab that christmas bargain all in good time).
However those yorkshire puddings, christmas tree lights and this years trends are beginning to bring me a warm feeling deep inside my belly.
Embellishment, glitter, sequins, metallics and studs bring us a new very festive eighties and rock groupie inspired look to invest in this season. Whether it be for that christmas party or christmas dinner, casual and evening wear gives us something for everyone; this is proof that there is still something to get excited about this christmas.
Debenhams Mega Days are running until Sunday 22nd November.
Top 5 tracks;
Lady GaGa – Bad Romance
The Noisettes – Saturday Night
Chipmunk ft Talay Riley – Look For Me
Jason Derulo – Whatcha Say
30H! 3 ft Katy Perry – Starstrukk
Listening to David Guetta’s new album ONE LOVE, Messages by Filthy Dukes, Fight For This Love by Cheryl Cole, Busta Rhymes ft Estelle – World Go Round, Chipmunk – Ooopsy Daisy, Mr. Hudson – White Lies, Black Eyed Peas – Meet Me Halfway, DJ Chuckie – Let The Bass Kick and Jay Sean – Down.
Tuning into FLASHFORWARD on channel 5 every monday evening – catch up on 5 on demand. Gossip Girl has also finally returned on ITV2 at 8pm every Wednesday.
And one for the guys…whether you are hitting the club, pub or lecture try turning up your skinny jeans to fit the newest jeanius trend. Roll up three or four times to form a quarter length trouser or just once or twice to create an indie rock look. I have seen guys all over campus sporting the trend as well as celebrities in magazines and on TV. This also looks great with plymsoles – think Danyl from this years X Factor or Pete Doherty (sorry I could not find any pictures to use as examples).
After speaking to some people who went to Reading 09, here is a snapshot of their favourite performances…
