NEXT STOP COPENHAGEN…

As September 2010 is finally upon us, it will be Christmas before we know it and thus we must put aside our winter blues and embrace our last deep breath of summer air before our current summer is over. After all even though we are entering A/W territory, September Fashion Week gives us the first look at the spring/ summer 2011 trends.

However we should at first pay homage to Copenhagen and Stockholm fashion week (both took place in August) which saw a new and exciting surge of talent exploding from Denmark and Sweden – one which has bubbled for the last couple of seasons. Scandinavia has quite correctly been dubbed as the ‘one-to-watch’ on the fashion front, with Copenhagen and Stockholm fighting for their place as the next fashion capital.

My favourite designer from the North of the globe…

Malene Birger

‘By Malene Birger’ is not a new label per say but this year did see Malene open her first Boutique store in London. Her career started back in 1989 after she graduated with a design degree from a prestigious Danish design school. Ms. Birger then went straight into work for Jackpot by Carli Gry, and Marc O’ Polo in Stockholm before starting up her first company Day Birger et Mikkelsen and winning the Danish Design Award. By Malene Birger was then founded in 2003 and has grown in strength season after season in the last few years, slowly spreading its wings over Europe, and even stretching to Dubai, winning award after award.

Malene is also strongly committed to charity work, and has been an ambassador for UNICEF Denmark since 2004. Every season she designs a special T-shirt with all proceeds going to children in need in the world, so far the label has donated 2.3 million DKK.

The S/S 11 collection epitomizes cool and classic city chic at its best, with effortlessly pure cuts and drapes, and elegant and light-weight tailoring – taking you from the city to the pool or lake side (let’s hit the Hamptons now). There is also a hint of fun with nautical stripes and anchor prints, headscarves and trilbys – true Riviera style. While chunky, tribal jewellery is mixed-up with leather and stud detailing, without forgetting some sophisticated embellishment to add some sparkle.

Here are some of my favourite pieces from the S/S 11 collection…expect an array of crisp whites, soft neutrals to dirty khakis, golden yellows, and black – grey with a sprinkle of sequins. Also take note of the diamond encrusted strappy sandals – I heart big time.
