What to wear this Autumn? Here are some of the main trends for Autumn/ Winter 2009…

Red and Black – Red in all shades, pillar-box, cherry and scarlet. Try out a daring red dress or team a red top or cardigan with black trousers or skinny jeans depending on where you want to wear your look. For those of you who are not as daring use a red lipstick, nail polish or team an outfit with some red shoes, handbag or accessories…a simple fix to add red to your wardrobe this Autumn. redMix in some black with your red and you will be bang on trend.

Boys can also add a red tie, t.shirt, cardigan or jumper to fit the trend. They could also invest in a checked shirt adding a Scottish vibe to the look.

The checked shirt trend is also big for the ongoing interest in the ‘preppy’ look. This mixes denim with leather satchels, striped scarves and woolly hats. Boys could add a duffel coat or a military styled short jacket for a retro chic look, while girls can mix a tweed jacket with a tartan skirt and over the knee socks.

Dogtooth print is also back in all its glory, if you feel brave invest in a dogtooth dress or coat, or for a simple touch add a dogtooth scarf to your outfit. Try this Dogtooth dress, £65  from Oasis (also pictured below)  (black and white scarves also available for £18) or this Red and Black Dogtooth scarf £22 from Warehouse (available in black and white for same price too).

This seasons vintage girl brings together traditional vintage styling with smart dressing to give a feminine edge. For a 40’s look think simple neutral colours in camel, cream and terracotta to navy, grey and black (taken from the popular easy luxe range). Perfect pencil skirts with tailored cuts and structured outerwear is given a modern twist with suede. Add a fascinator or headband and some leather gloves to complete the look. While ruffles, bows, ribbons and pretty brocade, jewelled shoes, pearls and lace detail focuses on the more traditional vintage vibe. Lace tights, french underwear worn with baggy boyfriend knits (see below) or over the knee socks all add to the trend (but it’s perhaps better to wear these indoors).

Super Knitwear – oversized jumpers and cardigans will not only keep you warm and toasty this winter but will also be a key piece for your wardrobe this season. Oasis have a good choice in a variety of colours, styles and prices, from dresses, simple cardigans and jumpers to boyfriend style oversized knit, have a look at

These oversized knits alongside blazers and shirts continue the hot boyfriend trend that visualises a girlfriend wearing her boyfriend’s clothes. It also transcends the new folklore look that extends boho into colourful knitwear, fringed boots, print bags and beaded bangles.

Space Age, futuristic 80’s and metallics are all statement pieces this Autumn/Winter. This sees a mix of eighties glam punk reworked with a futuristic feel. Shoulder pads and velvet have returned while body con teamed with metallic and sequined jackets have been reinvented.

Sequin shoulder pad dress £150 Oasis …also in iris and emerald green. (This style is fresh from the Balmain catwalk and is leaving fashionistas in a frenzy).

Trophy Blazer £180 Topshop

Gold Foil Vest £25 Topshop

Grey embellished shoulder tee £25 Miss. Selfridge

Fusion Shiver Sequin Dress Monsoon £60,5,shop,women,dresses,fusiondresses

The Oasis dogtooth dress (above) also features shoulder pads if you want to pull together two key trends.

Rebellious leather, lace and studs extends the glam punk look. Exposed zips, thigh high boots and cut out detail on footwear also mixes up your wardrobe. ELLE (Oct 09) quotes “it’s rock chick with layers of attitude”. This trend has grown out of the BALMANIA sexy punk look incorporating studded ankle boots, embellished detailing and tuxedo jackets.

Wild and animalistic twists will also be hot bringing together plumage and feathers to handbags, headbands, hats and accessories. A feisty animal print is also timeless. ASOS have a good selection in their Autumn/ Winter upcoming collections, and Topshop are beginning to bring in some feathered skirts, but look out for other key animal like elements in other shops.

Geek chic – rock for boys – think Pete Doherty from the Babyshambles. 50’s underground rock and geek chic creates a unique look for boys this season. Ginghams, skinny jeans, geek glasses, and loafers worn with t.shirts featuring old album like prints and artwork. Shops like ASOS, Topman and River Island will include these statement pieces into their collections in the coming months.
